The distance on a dating app is a guess, not a fact. GPS is coarsened for privacy, often cached from hours ago, drifts badly indoors, and on several apps you can simply set your location somewhere else with a paid 'passport' feature. So the person shown '1 mile away' might be across the city, offline, or somewhere they were this morning. 'Nearby' is the number people trust most and verify least.
